Living for Eternity

Zombie Reminder

Posted by thecrump |

It seems that every day I look around and there is some other form of zombie fanfare hitting the streets. From movies, tv shows, games and apps zombies are a hot item right now. I'm not sure the reason behind this trend.  I could attempt to wax eloquent about how this desire to watch the undead stems from a deep desire to have eternal life (that's unless someone blows your head up apparently), but I honestly think it's simply a love for gore and death that feeds much (not all) of the appetite for zombies.

Of course, I did not write this to discuss main stream zombies. I am writing to discuss what the worlds reaction would be to real zombies. After all, if some dead people came back to life would the world not put them on tv and ask them all sorts of questions (while dodging their attempts to eat brains). What if real zombies could actually speak about the afterlife? Imagine if these individuals who were once dead were able to talk to people about the reality of heaven and hell. Faced with the realities of the living dead and their experience...would people be willing to repent and trust God for salvation?

The Bible tells us the answer...and it's "no."

Now the Bible does not describe the flesh eating sort of zombies, but it does mention the living dead (or resurrected).  In the story of the poor man (Lazarus) and the rich man we get to overhear this frightening exchange.

“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’“He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” Luke 16:27-31

After living the good life with no desire for the things of God, the rich man find himself faced with hell. While there he is able to see Abraham and calls out for him to send the living dead to tell his family about God and salvation. After all, if a zombie were to talk to a family member, they would believe...right? Abraham makes it clear that no amount of the walking dead is going to change a heart that is hardened by sin and self. We need the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts. Then, when the zombie apocalypse does happen...we won't fear death because we have heaven waiting.
